WHAT IS THE LUBERON?

DISCOVER THE LUBERON

If you are planning a weekend or vacation in the south of France, we can only recommend visiting the Luberon.

To give you a better idea, the Luberon massif is a range of the western French Alps. These mountains stretch between Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and Vaucluse, more precisely from Cavaillon to Banon. They cover over 60 km in length and 5 km in width, providing an ideal landscape for a summer getaway in Provence!

You can enjoy a mild Mediterranean climate, particularly pleasant during summer. Located 70 km from Marseille, the region is still far from the Côte d’Azur, famous for its beaches and sunny weather in July and August.

Preserved, the lands of the Luberon are recognized as a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. With its ochre quarries, cliffs, mountains offering stunning panoramas, vineyards and lavender fields, you will explore a region full of cultural and heritage richness.

Although touristic, the mountainous region offers plenty of space for numerous hikes and driving routes. Visits, museums, monuments, towns, and picturesque villages await you. You will not be disappointed!

VISIT THE MOST BEAUTIFUL VILLAGES OF THE LUBERON

The Luberon is divided into several regions, each with its own charm that we invite you to explore:

  • the Aigues region;
  • the Apt region;
  • the Vaucluse hills;
  • the Forcalquier region.

Beyond Apt, the capital of the Luberon, you will find some of the most beautiful Provençal villages.

We are talking about Roussillon, Gordes, Ansouis, Cucuron, Ménerbes, Oppède-le-Vieux, and Lourmarin. Stunning landscapes await you, along with a picturesque, almost romantic atmosphere. Rich in history, these villages have much to reveal. Visiting them first allows you to appreciate the ancient stone architecture that has given the Luberon its timeless image.

WHAT DRIVE TO TAKE IN THE LUBERON?

FOLLOW A FLEXIBLE ROUTE TO SUIT YOUR WISHES

We suggest a car route that “runs itself” and allows you to enjoy both a beautiful classic car, the scenic Provençal roads, and some must-see stops.

For example:

  1. Start your tour near the perched village of Ansouis. Take the time to admire the beauty of Ansouis Castle, a fortress built in the 10th century. Make a detour to Saint-Martin Church for impressive views.
  2. Continue to Lourmarin, one of the most beautiful villages in France. Its streets, shops, restaurants, and cafes will charm you.
  3. Head to Coustellet to visit the Lavender Museum, a true symbol of Provence.
  4. Plan a visit to the Sénanque Abbey to take in its architecture and endless lavender fields.
  5. End with a hike on the ochre trail. Lasting 30 to 60 minutes depending on your chosen path, you may feel like you are in the American Colorado, yet you are in Provence, in the Luberon! Consider stopping by the Ochre Conservatory.

Finally, enjoy a well-deserved break by Étang de la Bonde.

We will provide a roadbook with all points of interest for an unforgettable drive!
